Zoom Q3HD Camcorder Now For 300$

Short version: A versatile and a very useful pocket cam for people who value the audio portion of their video, but its high price may make those on the fence opt for a cheaper, more rugged model.

Features:
  • High-quality microphones
  • 1080p/720p recording
  • On-device levels and EQ
  • Takes AA batteries
  • MSRP: $300
Pros:
  • Audio really is way better, levels display is great to have
  • Wide-ish angle lens
  • AA batteries
Cons:
  • Feels cheap
  • Small screen for video
  • AA batteries
Full review:
Pocket cams are little devices convinient for he users , but they sacrificed alot for the image quality by having a tiny lens and sensor, and although people don’t often think of it, they also sacrificed audio quality by having a simple mono microphone, often poorly placed. This doesn’t seem like a problem until you truly can’t make out what’s being said because of traffic noise or what have you. The Zoom Q3HD attempts to fix this by putting a pair of high-quality (compared to other pocket cams, anyway) microphones at the top, which are also more sensitive.
We may as well be honest and admit that this isn’t exactly a new product. The Zoom Q3 has been out for a while, and this is an HD refresh. But to be fair, it’s a new design and the complaints relating to the old Q3 were often video-related. At any rate, the HD one is here now, and we’re reviewing it.
The device is very light, more so than other pocket cams, and really has the feel of a toy rather than a piece of equipment. I can’t say I’m too pleased with that, but it is at least well put together, and includes a USB connector (on a rather short leash). There are a number of ports on the side for audio in and out. The battery compartment is in the front, but is secure enough that I doubt you’ll accidentally pop it out.

Operation is quite simple, like other pocket cams: you have a big red button for starting and stopping the recording, a d-pad surrounding it, and buttons for mode, menu, and delete. The buttons themselves aren’t noteworthy; they’re buttons. The d-pad could be more responsive, but I got around the simple graphical menu system fine. There’s really not too much configuration that needs to be done with these simple camcorders anyway.
The options are mostly self-explanatory: a couple frame and scene modes for video, and some bitrate/format options for audio. AAC and PCM are your choices, bitrate from 160 to 320kbps, and you can change the low cut and gain settings.
Video is no better than your average pocket cam, but the Q3HD does have a refreshingly wide-angle lens. It’s not something the average shopper thinks of or notices, but most pocket cams have millimeter equivalents of maybe 50mm, when what you really want is something below 30. I’d put the Q3HD at around 35mm in angle, which makes framing shots easier. It’s not autofocus, unfortunately, so you’re stuck with a fixed infinity focus starting at around 18 inches from the lens. Par for the course with pocket cams, though you can find autofocus camcorders easily for under $200.
I wanted to make a video showing the improvement a Q3HD provides in the audio department, but things weren’t really working out as I hoped. I realize that makes it sound like the device doesn’t actually do anything different, but I assure you it does. It’s much, much better at filtering out voices in a crowded room, and making sounds much warmer and more natural to the ear. The pinhole mics often found on pocket cams and even some mid-range camcorders tend to muddle everything together, but the Q3HD (as has been noted in its previous version) really does make for better sound.
One thing that helps is a quick switch for going between low gain, high gain, and auto. While it does a good job auto-leveling, occasionally you might want to minimize background noise or just be sure you catch every word, and the switch from lo to hi is instant and noticeable. It’s especially handy having the live levels feedback on the video screen at all times (though the actual video itself is relatively small, unfortunately), as it lets you know when you’re clipping or not getting enough sound.
Another thing the Q3HD provides is a wealth of ports. A built-in USB cord is convenient, but it also has analog TV out, HDMI out, and 1/8″ lines in and out. This means it can be a plain sound recorder or a microphone for your DSLR or camcorder; you can turn the camera function off and just use the sound-recording function.
Conclusion
Basically what we’ve got here is a video blogger’s multitool. It’s no better than the competition when it comes to video quality, but the much-improved microphones provide better stereo separation, more warmth, better clarity, and also function as a digital voice recorder and external microphone. At $300, it’s nearly double the price of its Flip and Kodak competition, however, and it’s not a particularly rugged device, so consider what your needs are before dropping your dollar.

Mozilla is going to Add Do-not-track Feature to Firefox

Mozilla has decided to add a do-not-track feature to their web browser Firefox, which will prevent websites and advertisers from tracking a user's actions online.

Once activated through the settings, this feature would broadcast a do-not-track message to each website that a user visits. However, it still depends upon the owners of those websites or advertising companies whether or not they choose to collect user data.

Microsoft had a similar feature in the older versions of Internet Explorer, but had to remove it because it was having a negative impact on the business of online advertisers. Google is expected to implement something similar in their Chrome web browser, but it won't be built-in and would require third-party software.

While Mozilla's tool would be pretty useful to users in maintaining their privacy, the fact that it depends upon online services to go against their best interests and not collect your data makes us doubt its effectiveness.

Apple Launching Its iPad In India On January 28th

Apple finally decided to launch its iPad in India. According to The Telegraph, the iPad will be launching in India on January 28th, which is just three days away from today. The iPad will be available in India only through Apple's premium retailers.
According to The Telegraph, the Wi-Fi version of the iPad will be priced somewhere between Rs. 26,000 to Rs. 33,000. The 3G+Wi-Fi version will be priced somewhere between Rs.33,000 to Rs. 44,000. Each version will be coming in three capacities, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.

The iPad itself requires no introduction. By now almost everyone has heard of or used the iPad in India. We are just disappointed that Apple took this long to launch the iPad here. With the second generation iPad launch just three months away from now, does it mean that we won't be getting it on time as well? Something tells us the answer is "Yes" .

MNP (Mobile Number Portability) comes to India today

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced, on November 20, 2009, that Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will be introduced in India, on December 31, 2009.
TRAI said that subscribers in India will be able to change their service providers while keeping the same mobile number, at a fee of no more than Rs 19. It doesn’t matter whether you want switch from GSM to CDMA or vice-versa, or within GSM and CDMA opetaors; you can still retain the same number. However, initially, you will be able to switch operators and retain the number only within the same telecom circle. You cannot retain the same number and change operators if you want to, say, move from Delhi to Mumbai.

TRAI also said that service provider will be able to charge any amount less than or equal to Rs.19

MNP will be introduced in India, in two phases. It will first be introduced in Indian metros and Category A telecom zones, on December 31, 2009, and subsequently in the rest of the country, by March 20, 2010.
Subscribers must pay up all pending bills before making an application for MNP. The porting fees is to be paid to the new operator. No payment is required to be given to the operator you are leaving. TRAI said that porting between mobile operators should be accomplished within four days. There’s a catch though. You cannot switch operator and retain number if you have been with that operator for less than three months. Prepaid users must remember that their balance talk time will disappear if they switch to a different operator. The maximum downtime between deactivating the existing connection and starting the new connection will be a maximum of two hours.
As for Dipping charges, the charge will be mutually agreed upon between a service provider or international long distance provider to the MNP service provider.
Licences were provided to two MNP Service Providers (MNPSPs) for two zones in the country, earlier in the year.

Dipping charges are charges that a service provider would need to pay to use the query response systems of the two MNP service providers. Service providers can use the query response systems to get the Location Routing Number for routing a message to the called number.
The MNP service provider will need to fix the Dipping charge thirty days from the date of publication of these regulations in the official Gazette, TRAI said.
The charge may be reviewed after a period of one year.
The move is sure to unsettle the market. It will generate fierce competition between service providers and force big ones to improve their services. At the same time, it will benefit new players immensely. Several surveys have found that about 7-10% of all mobile users are unhappy with their current mobile service provider. Introduction of mobile number portability will facilitate the easy exit of disgruntled users. This also means telcos will have to put more effort to retain those customers, who earlier stayed loyal to the operator out of the necessity of retaining their number.
Mobile operators offering telecom services in India include state-owned BSNL and MTNL, besides private operators like Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Loop Mobile, Aircel, MTS and Tata Indicom/DoCoMo. Once mobile number portability is across in India, every operator will have to facilitate customers’ exit from and entry to their networks with the same number.

Voice Updates For Facebook Offered By Aircel

If you are bored of updating status through text messages , then Aircel has something new to offer. All Aircel subscribers can now perform 'voice updates' for their Facebook status by simply calling 51555. The end result won't be a speech to text translation or anything, because let's face it, that would be a utter disaster given our varied accents. Instead, the message will appear as a audio recording on your wall, which your friends can listen by just clicking it. The reason for such a feature would probably be the low percentage of smartphone users in India.

Compared to Europe and the US, smartphone adoption is still at a nascent stage here. Many people would like to update their status but may find smartphones a bit intimidating. That's where Aircel's initiative comes in. This is a far simpler way of updating your status by simply calling a number rather than subscribing for a GPRS plan and then buying a decent enough phone in order to access the Facebook app.

Whether other countries get a similar update still remains to be seen, but it's certainly a novel idea to make Facebook accessible to the masses while on the move.

YouTube videos gets over 200 Million Views Per Day

YouTube applications in Mobile has seen a huge growth in the past couple of years, it is all because of the growth in the number of smartphones and devices that come with the YouTube app pre-installed, and also the popularity of the YouTube mobile site. YouTube has now released the official numbers, which turn out  to be over 200 million video views per day, which is up by 3x from January 2010.

Apart from this YouTube is also adding music videos to their library of videos, but only for the Android YouTube app. YouTube has partnership with VEVO, so users can now access music videos from labels such as EMI, Sony and UMG and also get other stuff such as artist bio and other tracks by that artist.

These videos will come at a small cost to the users. They will now have to sit through 15 second pre-roll ads before they can start watching these videos. While this may sound annoying it will ensure you will continue to get premium content on your Android phone in future. The feature is currently limited to Android app users but will soon be available to those on other platforms as well as those who use the mobile website.

Microsoft Is Working On FaceTime Rival Service

Are you guys crazy for the smartphones bearing front facing cameras for video-call/chat ever since Apple showed its FaceTime feature on the iPhone 4. The latest manufacturer to join the flock is Microsoft. A website called Neowin has evidence of a chat application that will use front-facing camera application for the Windows Phone 7 platform. This platform is intended to compete with the Apple's FaceTime.

Recently, Skype released a new version 3.0 App for iPhone and iPad platforms. It allows to make video calls over 3G and Wi-Fi. As per Neowin, a key Windows Phone 7 employee talked about several upcoming features for the WP7 platform at a high profile event.

An ex-Microsoft Silverlight Program Manager, Justin Angel, furnished a screenshot of a Microsoft.Phone.Media.Extended.dll file that mentions of making use of SelfPortrait Camera aka the front-facing camera. This video chat service might come as part of Microsoft Live services for the Windows Phone 7 platform.  It's unsure whether it would be shown at the Mobile World Congress 2011 or later this year.

Microsoft needs to buckle up for introducing the Video call/chat service for Windows Phone 7. We can anticipate this feature to come along with Windows Phone 7.5 update, rumored to be codenamed as Mango. Google has already shown Video Chat feature through Android 3.0 Honeycomb meant for Tablets only.

Patch for PS3 Hacks Promised By Sony

Sony is now aware of the booming  of PlayStation 3 hacking community and the exploits that are being talked about over the web. Just two days ago, a custom firmware creator tool had been released by PlayStation 3 hacker . Before that the PS3 console Root Key was made public by George GeoHot Hotz. Even the Blu-ray and PSP root keys were made public via forums. Sony spokesperson told Edge Magazine that the company is aware of these exploits and will fix them through network updates.

Getting through the PlayStation 3 OS and breaking the encryption for getting the root key is a tough job. The Fail0verflow team had shown how the PS3 jailbreak would let them gain control of entire system and allow installing open-source programs on it. At the 26th Chaos Communication Conference that took place last month end, fail0verflow demonstrated the exploit that would let them pass through the PS3 security.

Earlier this year, Hotz claimed to have cracked the console. When Sony discovered the hack the Other OS feature was removed via system update. However, the real objective was always hidden under the blanket of piracy prevention.

Last month the PS3 hacking scene started heating up. Hotz released the public key after fail0verflow published the method hack through the security. Both parties don't condone piracy and do not want anyone to turn the result of their hard work into a breeding pirated games business.

Pytey, fail0verflow team member told BBC news that the console has been compromised and there is no recovery from that. The fail0verflow team is working on tools that will let Root Keys to sign only Homebrew software and not the games.

We don't know what tragic turn this squabble between Sony, Hotz and fail0verflow will take. Hacks and root keys are out in the public and to prevent any sort of reverse engineering on the game console, Sony is planning to patch all the holes at any cost.

Over 750 million photos uploaded on Facebook in this New Year

Facebook popularity is growing day by day . If you needed more proof of its popularity, here it is. Over the New Year s weekend, Facebook users uploaded over 750 million photos. This little tidbit of information comes from Facebook's marketing director (and founder Mark Zuckerberg s sister) Randi Zuckerberg through one of her tweets. To put things into perspective, over a 100 million images are uploaded on Facebook on an average day. This goes to show how important a part have social networking websites such as Facebook become of people's lives. These days, it seems as if photos are taken with the sole intention of sharing them over Facebook, instead of the way it was before, where people took pictures so they can look back at those memories at a later date and cherish them again. Ah, those were the days

Nokia N8 Sells Reach 4 Million Units

Nokia is been in the news for selling a lot of high-end smartphones since probably the N95. Now its the time for Nokia N8 which shows a remarkable boom in Mobile Market.
A Finland based research company Inderes Oy has stated that Nokia has sold between 3.5 million to 4 million handsets. It has also become one of the top selling handsets in Finland, India, Malaysia and UAE, countries where Nokia is known to be considered in high regard.

However, neither the research company nor the Nokia has revealed the exact figures. If the numbers are to be believed, the N8 seems to be doing pretty well, which is good because it is a very good phone as we found out in our review.
